A port city with distinct risks
Chattogram combines the country's main seaport, export processing zones at CEPZ and KEPZ, heavy industry along the Karnaphuli and the new economic zone at Mirsarai. Its buildings face two pressures that Dhaka's do not in the same way: salt-laden coastal air and a higher seismic hazard.
Coastal corrosion
Chlorides in the sea air reach concrete and steel quickly. We regularly find corroded reinforcement in older port-area and industrial buildings and in steel sheds whose coatings have broken down. Assessments here include chloride, carbonation and half-cell testing, and repair designs specify durable cover, coatings and galvanised components.
Seismic hazard and hilly ground
Chattogram lies in a higher BNBC 2020 seismic zone than Dhaka, and parts of the city are built on hill slopes and cut-and-fill sites. Seismic evaluation and slope-aware foundation design matter more here.

Questions from Chattogram
Is Chattogram at higher earthquake risk than Dhaka?
Yes. Chattogram is in a higher seismic zone under BNBC 2020, so design forces are larger and seismic evaluation of older buildings is especially important.
How do you protect steel buildings near the sea?
With blast cleaning, coating systems rated for coastal exposure, galvanised secondary members and fixings, and details that do not trap salt and water.
